World War II
World War II called for women to join the work force and support the war effort. The industrial work force increased by more than 35 percent during World War II. This destructive war cost the US $200 billion. The government sold war bonds to raise money for the war and many materials such as food and gas were rationed throughout the United States. Propaganda during WWII mainly encouraged men to fight in the war and for women to join the work force. Women worked during the war. They built planes, tanks and other materials that would be used in the war. Women not only worked in the industry at home, but they also served in the war. The home front, which was supported by the families at home, helped the war efforts by growing victory gardens, buying war bonds, and rationing out food and gas. Women contributed to the WWII war effort by working in manufacturing industries, serving in the military, and the home front.
