Women Serve in the Military
Women not only worked in industry, but they also helped serve in the military. Women did not directly fight in the war but they helped the men by providing supporting services. Helping the United States toward victory seemed like the only hope for women during the early 1940s. The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) organization attracted more than 25,000 female pilots. Of those 25,000, 1,879 were accepted and 1,047 graduated from the training program. In 1942, the Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron had to deliver aircraft to military bases. The Army Air Forces organization then realized the importance of this group and decided to expand it. Many of these woman pilots volunteered their services and gave lives in order to help the United States win this war.
